Boston Terrier for Sale: These Dapper Dudes Love a Good Time!

by Petland Pensacola
# Tips & Tricks

Cheerful, energetic, and endlessly affectionate, the Boston Terrier is a wonderful choice for families who want a compact companion with a big personality. These dapper little dogs are as fun-loving as they come, and it's easy to see why they've been an American favorite for generations.

If you're considering a Boston Terrier for your household, here's what makes this breed so special, plus a look at how to care for one day to day.

An All-American Original

Many people don't realize the Boston Terrier is one of the few dog breeds developed right here in the United States, specifically in Boston, Massachusetts. Thanks to those origins and the tuxedo-like markings of their black-and-white coats, Bostons earned the charming nickname the "American Gentleman."

They've been a household staple since the 1960s, and their fun, affable nature has kept them popular ever since. You can read more about the breed's history and official standard from the American Kennel Club's Boston Terrier profile.

Looks That Make You Take Notice

Bostons have a short, smooth coat that's almost shiny in appearance. You'll find them in a few classic color combinations:

  • Brindle with white markings
  • Black with white markings
  • Seal (a chocolaty red) with white markings

Their tails add to the charm, too, appearing as either cute little nubs or "screw tails" that resemble a piglet's curl. As for size, they vary quite a bit, ranging from about 14 pounds up to 28 pounds, with an average lifespan of roughly 12 to 14 years.

Personality and Temperament

Bostons are energetic and love to play, but they don't need marathon exercise sessions. A few short play sessions or moderate walks throughout the day are actually better than one long, intense workout.

Keep an Eye on the Heat

Because of their flat, short faces, Bostons can overheat quickly during extreme play or in hot weather, something Pensacola families should keep in mind during our warm summers. The American Veterinary Medical Association's warm-weather safety tips are a great resource for keeping any short-nosed breed cool and comfortable.

Great With Kids and Other Pets

The Boston does wonderfully with children and other animals. They're heartier than many small breeds and can handle a slightly rougher playtime, making them a fun match for active households.

Grooming Made Simple

Caring for a Boston's coat is refreshingly easy. An occasional bath supplemented by regular brushing is really all it takes to keep them looking sharp. Brushing also helps control shedding, which does happen but stays minimal in this breed.
