Meet Josh and Kyra
At Petland Pensacola, we believe dogs do more than fill our homes with joy — sometimes they change and even save lives. That belief is why we're honored to share the story of Josh and his service dog, Kyra.
We're proud to be the 100% sponsor of this life-changing partnership, and we'll be following Josh and Kyra's journey together in the months ahead.
Who Is Josh?
Josh is a United States Army veteran who served our country for eight years, including a deployment during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is also a former member of the U.S. Army Parachute Demonstration Team, better known as the Golden Knights.
Today, Josh's family includes his wife and four children — and now a loyal new teammate named Kyra.
Meet Kyra
Kyra is a trained service dog partnered with Josh to support him in daily life. She was placed through Heartland Canines for Veterans, an organization that pairs specially trained service dogs with veterans living with PTSD and other disabilities.
The dogs are trained by Tim Franks, and each placement is made possible through community donations. For Josh and Kyra, that support came in the form of Petland Pensacola's full sponsorship.
How Service Dogs Help Veterans
A well-trained service dog can be a steadying presence for a veteran managing the challenges of PTSD, offering companionship, routine, and practical assistance throughout the day. These dogs undergo extensive, task-specific training before they're matched with a handler.
- Providing calm, grounding companionship during stressful moments
- Building daily structure and encouraging activity
- Performing trained tasks tailored to a veteran's needs
You can read more about how these remarkable animals are prepared for the job in the American Kennel Club's overview of service dog training and what these dogs learn.
Why Petland Pensacola Got Involved
Because of veterans like Josh, we enjoy the freedom we so often take for granted. Sponsoring Kyra is one small way we can give back to someone who gave so much. Programs like Heartland Canines for Veterans rely on donations to keep placing service dogs with the men and women who need them, and we encourage our community to support that mission however they can.
We'll keep sharing updates as we follow Josh and his best friend Kyra — a partnership we're truly grateful to be part of.
