The Lion Dog With a Regal Past
Formally known as the Tibetan Shih Tzu Kou, this breed is often assumed to have Chinese roots. In reality, the Shih Tzu originated in Tibet, where Buddhist monks considered them holy and kept them within their temples.
These little dogs earned their keep, too. They served as alarm and guard dogs and even helped turn prayer wheels during daily Buddhist rituals.
What the Name Means
When Tibetan monks gifted the dogs to Chinese emperors, they earned their Chinese name. "Shih Tzu" translates to "Lion Dog" strstrength of character and features. They also picked up the nickname "chrysanthemum-faced dog," a nod to the way the hair grows outward from the center of the face.
One of the Oldest Breeds on Earth
The Shih Tzu's exact origins are shrouded in mystery, making it one of the oldest breeds in existence. Some of the earliest definitive traces appear in Chinese paintings dating to around 500 AD, along with documents describing these dogs being gifted a second time from China to the Byzantine Empire.
Much later, they became the official breed of the illustrious Ming dynasty, kept as royal pets for centuries. Yet the breed nearly vanished from China following the Communist Revolution.
How the Shih Tzu Reached America
As the breed declined in China, a small group of citizens in the United Kingdom worked to preserve it, importing dogs during the 1930s. That effort essentially saved the breed: every modern Shih Tzu can be traced back to the original 14 dogs brought from China to England.
- American soldiers brought the Shih Tzu home after World War II.
- The breed quickly gained popularity across the country.
- The American Kennel Club recognized the Shih Tzu in 1969, and it remains one of the most beloved companion breeds today.
Is a Shih Tzu Right for Your Home?
Shih Tzus are affectionate, adaptable, and happy in apartments or houses alike. Their long, luxurious coat does require regular grooming, and their flat faces mean they can be sensitive to heat, so plan for indoor comfort during Florida summers.
