Siberian Huskies Are so Stinkin’…Cute That Is

by Petland Pensacola
# Tips & Tricks

You brought home an adorable Siberian Husky puppy, and after a few weeks that soft coat isn't looking quite as shiny or smelling as sweet as it did on day one. That usually means it's time for a bath.

Maybe you've only ever handed your pup off to a professional groomer and you're finally ready to try it yourself at home. Don't worry, these simple tips will help you turn bath time into an easy, positive routine for both of you.

Bathing Basics Before You Start

A few ground rules go a long way toward keeping your Siberian Husky comfortable and clean.

  • Bathe about once a month. Unless your pup rolls in the mud, monthly is a good rule of thumb. If she gets filthy sooner, go ahead and bathe her.
  • Never leave your puppy unattended. Stay with her the entire time near water.
  • Consider the breed. Some dogs are prone to dry skin, and frequent baths can make that worse. Most dogs, including Siberian Huskies, aren't especially prone to dry skin.
  • Brush between baths. Regular brushing manages matting and tangling and makes bath time much easier.

Start the Routine Early

Even if a professional groomer handles the first few baths, get your puppy used to the process sooner rather than later. Early exposure helps her accept bathing as a normal part of life.

If you're bathing her at home for the first time, lean on praise. Plenty of encouragement helps her feel calm and comfortable in the water.

Pick the Right Spot

Husky puppies are small at first, but they grow fast. In the early weeks, a sink works perfectly for washing your little one. As she gets bigger, you'll need to move to a bathtub, a walk-in shower, or a kiddie pool in the yard during warm Pensacola summers.

Make Bath Time Fun

Your puppy will adjust much faster if bathing feels like play. Toss a favorite toy or two into the water to keep her occupied, and keep the praise flowing the whole time. A positive first impression pays off for years of easy baths.

Rinse Thoroughly and Protect the Eyes

Once you've shampooed your pup, rinse until the water runs clear. Just like with people, leftover shampoo can leave the skin dry and flaky.

Be careful around her face. Keep water and soap out of the eyes and ears, and never spray directly at them. For guidance on gentle, safe grooming habits, the ASPCA's dog grooming tips are a helpful reference.

Be Ready for the Big Shake

You've seen the videos of dogs happily shaking off water. It's cute to watch, but less fun to be standing beside! Keep a towel close and pat your pup dry to cut down on the spray.

If you can, use a hair dryer on a low, cool setting to speed up drying. Remember, a Husky's thick double coat holds a lot of water, so her shakes reach far and wide. To understand that dense coat better, the American Kennel Club's Siberian Husky breed profile explains why grooming matters so much.
