Rin Tin Tin: The Silent Film Superstar
Rin Tin Tin is arguably the most famous German Shepherd of all time. He was one of the puppies rescued from a World War I battlefield by an American soldier named Duncan Lee, who trained him to perform in silent films.
Rin Tin Tin became such a box-office draw that Warner Brothers would produce a new film starring him whenever the studio needed a financial boost. His accomplishments include:
- A rumored nomination for Best Actor at the first Academy Awards in 1929 (the award ultimately went to a human).
- The American Humane Association's first Legacy Award, presented in 2011.
- A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Strongheart: The Pioneer of Canine Cinema
Before Rin Tin Tin captured audiences, there was Strongheart, one of the very first canine film stars. He was trained in Germany as a police dog and served with the German Red Cross before being brought to the United States by the age of three.
Strongheart went on to appear in numerous films, including the 1925 adaptation of White Fang. A beloved celebrity in his own right, he helped pave the way for the German Shepherds who followed him onto the silver screen.
Six German Shepherds Take the Stage
The breed's talents weren't limited to film. During the mid-1980s, Dutch director Whim Schipper wrote a play titled Going to the Dogs, featuring six German Shepherds who received acting lessons in Amsterdam—motivated, of course, by plenty of treats.
The story followed a daughter who brought home a new boyfriend, exploring themes of love, jealousy, and parental concern. While the production didn't fare especially well, it stands as a testament to the breed's intelligence and trainability.
Heroes of the First World War
German Shepherds also proved their courage in wartime. Flax of Lewanno was honored at Westminster in 1917 for bringing 54 wounded soldiers to safety during World War I.
The war did more than showcase individual acts of bravery—it fueled the breed's popularity in the United States. American soldiers were so impressed by how capable these dogs were that many brought some home with them, introducing the German Shepherd to a whole new audience.
